CONJUNCTION (Kata Sambung)
A conjunction is a connecting word joining together word or group of words in a sentences. It is of two types: coordinate and subordinate conjunctions.
a. Coordinate conjunctions are : and, but, or and nor (join together things of equal rank/order – sama kedudukanya-), since, till, therefore, etc.
Examples :
1. I lost my red and black pen.(saya kehilangan pulpen warna hitam dan merah)
2. She bought a blouse and a shirt.(dia membeli sebuah blus dan sebuah kaos)
3. I didn’t go to Bali nor to Lombok.(saya tidak pergi ke Bali atau pun ke Lombok)
4. They left but I waited.(mereka pergi tapi saya menunggu)
The above conjunctions may form combination with another words as : both….and, not only….but also, either…..or, neither….nor, etc
Examples:
1. Both my wife and I didn’t much money for today.(-kedua-duanya- ,Istri saya dan saya tidak mendapatkan uang banyak untuk hari ini)
2. Neither I nor my wife joined them.(Tidak keduanya Saya atau pun istri saya gabung dengan mereka)
3. I saw not only Gondoruwo at old house but also his wife, Kuntilanak.( Saya melihat tidak hanya gondoruwo di gedung tua tapi juga istrinya, Kuntilanak)
b. Subordinate Conjunctions (connecting a subordinate clause with a word or another clause on which it depends), the are: if, when, before, after, while, as soon as, unless, etc.
Examples:
1. If I were at home now I would kill my time.( jika saya saya di rumah sekarang saya akan meluangkan waktu)
2. When I reached the station, the train has already left.(ketika saya mencari stasiun, kereta sudah berangkat.)
