Adverbial Phrases

ADVERBIAL PHRASES

Phrases function as adverbs may express some relation of cause, purpose, condition, or concession.
1. Expressing a relation of time; as: He has been absent since last week.
2. Expressing a relation of place; as; I live near the campus.
3. Expressing a relation of manner; as: He loves her very much.
4. Expressing a relation of cause; as: I was late because of the rain.
5. Expressing a relation of purpose; as: I have came to tell you the news.
6. Expressing a relation of condition ; as: We will go out of necessary.
7. Expressing a relation of concession; as: In spite of the rain, he went out.

The following are some more phrases of that kind, most of them use words which you already familiar with.
1. a head of time = sooner than expected
2. as a matter of fact = to tell the truth
3. as a rule = usually
4. at any rate = whatever happens
5. by accident = without being planned
6. by all means = at all costs, certainly
7. by and large = on the whole
8. by no means = not at all
9. for good = forever
10. for the time of being = temporary
11. From time to time again = occasionally, now and again
12. In the long run = in the end
13. In and on = without stopping
14. Sooner or later = in the end
15. To some extend = partly
